The desire to ascend the 'human condition' is nearly universal. We aspire to better ourselves by rising just one bit higher. One bit is never enough: there is always a higher plane . This need to ascend to an unknown but brightly imagined future washes the colour and vibrance from our immediate experience and contributes to dissatisfaction restlessness and ennui.
