Welcome,
Community Builders!
Thank you for visiting!
If you recently received a letter from us, you already know that the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art has been a cornerstone of Kelowna’s Cultural District for over 35 years.
As an artist-run centre and registered charity, we function differently from a traditional commercial gallery. We do not sell work, nor are we driven by market trends. Instead, we serve as the "Research & Development" (R&D) hub for our city's creative culture—providing a vital physical space where independent voices can take creative risks, test new ideas, and build community.
We believe that creative innovation should never sit behind a paywall. That is why our doors remain wide open, and the vast majority of our programming is 100% free for the 42,000+ visitors who engage with our space every year.
Today, we invite your business to invest in this critical cultural infrastructure and help us build what comes next.
The ArtsVest Match: Your Investment, Twice the Result
This year, your support goes twice as far. The Alternator is participating in ArtsVest, a national program administered by Business / Arts that provides 100% matching funds for every new private sector cash donation we receive before November 30, 2026.
The Bottom Line: A corporate gift of any size instantly generates double the community impact.
The Math: Your contribution is matched dollar-for-dollar. A donation of $1,000 instantly becomes $2,000 of direct support for Kelowna’s creative economy.
The Match Ratio: Every dollar is matched on a 1:1 basis.
The Deadline: This matching opportunity is time-limited and must be received by November 30, 2026, to qualify.
Where Your Investment Goes: "Bridges through Art"
We aren't looking for transactional sponsorships where you write a check and we simply slap your logo on a wall. We want to partner with local businesses that want a real, tangible stake in the health, livability, and social cohesion of Kelowna.
Your matched contribution directly funds our Bridges through Art initiative, a targeted program designed to tackle our community's most pressing social challenges through creative practice:
1. Mental Health & Reducing Isolation
We host a year-round calendar of hands-on, artist-facilitated workshops. These sessions function as accessible, non-clinical spaces where individuals find stress relief, quiet cognitive noise, and experience personal growth in a safe, peer-supported environment.
2. Civic Access & Inclusion
By maintaining our strict free-admission policy, we ensure that the Cultural District remains an inclusive, democratic space for all citizens—regardless of income or socioeconomic status. We actively showcase diverse, local, and equity-seeking perspectives across our curated contemporary exhibitions.
3. Community Cohesion & Connection
We bring our programs outside the physical gallery walls, hosting mobile workshops and collaborative outreach events with local non-profits, student groups, and seniors' organizations to dismantle isolation and rebuild our local social fabric.
Operational Transparency: Where Your Support Goes
We pride ourselves on being a lean, exceptionally frugal organization. We do not offer structured "sponsorship tiers" or commercialized "giving packages." Instead, corporate gifts of any size are pooled directly to cover the real, grassroots costs of our community programs.
To show you how our financial model works and how far your investment can go when doubled by the match, here are a few examples of what it costs us to execute these programs:
Example: Gallery Paint & Free Workshop Supplies (Your $500 becomes $1,000 through the match)
The Real Costs: A bulk order of professional gallery wall paint to maintain and refresh our exhibition spaces costs $500; restocking high-quality, tactile materials for our public sessions—including specialized printmaking tools, painting pigments, canvas boards, and drawing paper—covers the remaining $500.
The Frugal Impact: Your $500 contribution triggers the match to fully fund both the physical environment and the creative supplies. This ensures that finances are never a reason a member of our community is unable to participate, create, and find connection in our sessions.
Example: A Full Community Workshop Series (Your $1,000 becomes $2,000 through the match)
The Real Costs: Properly paying a professional local artist-facilitator to lead a multi-week creative wellness workshop is $1,200; specialized tactile workshop materials (like linocut blocks, ink, or workshop tools) cost $500; community outreach printing and accessible digital promotion total $300.
The Frugal Impact: At this level, you completely fund a multi-week program, ensuring that economic barriers never stand in the way of mental wellness, stress relief, and peer connection for everyday folks in the Okanagan.
Example: Mobile Outreach & Free Access Activation (Your $2,500 becomes $5,000 through the match)
The Real Costs: Mobile outreach kits and transport to take art outside our gallery walls to seniors and newcomers cost $1,500; public panel and dialogue event logistics run $1,000; and bridging the gap to ensure 100% free admission across all gallery programs totals $2,500.
The Frugal Impact: This triggers enough matching funds to completely anchor a major piece of our year-round public outreach or offset nearly three full months of our facility lease ($1,850/month). This allows us to actively dismantle social isolation by bringing seniors, students, and isolated individuals together through shared creative experiences.
These dollar examples illustrate scale, not a minimum. Any amount you give is matched $1:1$ through ArtsVest, making a real impact for the Alternator and the community we serve.
Recognition Tailored to Your Corporate Values
We respect that every business has its own approach to community investment:
Public Acknowledgment: If you wish to build visible alignment with Kelowna's cultural sector, we are happy to proudly list your business on our donor page, celebrate you in our Annual Report, and coordinate digital recognition.
Quiet Partnership: If you prefer your support to remain entirely private, we will honor your anonymity completely.
As a registered charity, all philanthropic contributions are eligible for a Canadian charitable tax receipt.
