Waiting for Spring is a collection of evocative collages depicting artist Heidi Smith’s personal experiences with seasonal depression. This series aims to capture some of the subtle and abstract ways that mental illness affects one’s motivation, self-image, and experience of the world. Through her artwork, Smith offers a glimpse of what goes on beneath the surface for those who struggle with mental illness.

Heidi Smith is an emerging artist who uses images from thrifted books and magazines to create surreal portraits and scenes through collage. Smith pays special attention to the balance, harmony and composition of her artwork as she explores themes of femininity, identity, and mental health.

Waiting for Spring will be on view at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art from February 8 – March 9, 2019. A public reception will be held on March 1 from 6-8pm. To explore more of Smith’s artwork, visit www.heidiraichellesmith.com/art or follow @art_by_heidiraichellesmith on Instagram.
