Portrait of my Neighbour is inspired by living in an apartment where the whole view from many angles is the house next door. Through this installation, Sidley explores the idea of neighbourhoods, where every house means something different to its occupant and yet it remains private. How can one’s private space be so close to someone else’s without ever intersecting? Both households in the attempt to remain private, keep their windows covered and the identity of the occupant is unknown. This image becomes the occupant’s portrait. Additionally, because this is all that is seen, the house itself is personified.
