As an emerging artist I create large-scale mixed-media paintings on canvas. I begin by developing a composition of simplified shapes, drawing inspiration from both natural forms and man-made objects. These shapes emerge through a process that moves between imagination and collage. I work with a pre-mixed colour palette, allowing me to focus on relationships between form and colour as the painting develops. The colours I choose are influenced by both nature and my emotional state. My initial composition acts as a guide, moving me away from the white rectangular canvas and into a space where my hand and imagination can play. Being present and intentional in my everyday life carries into my work.

I allow and make space for different colours to coexist, bleeding and blending into one another. Suggesting a softening of boundaries and where differences are not only accepted but allowed to interact and transform.

Long breaks allow me to come back to the piece with a new perspective. I have no fixed idea of how shapes or colours should appear; they emerge through time and patience.

My paintings reflect a way of existing that acknowledges the present through the past. One can see the initial brushstrokes overlapped with new ones. The ability to see through the work reveals the qualities of the paint, the canvas, and myself, someone striving for honesty and connection to people.

I have visited the Alternator multiple times through school. I took the Katherine Pickering Artist Statement workshop. I volunteer at Cool Arts and I often would see the different artists’ work on display behind the glass. This gallery means a great deal to me; it is important to have an artist-run gallery and to have somewhere that tries to include artists of all backgrounds, social standings, orientations, etc.
