This is sort of a non-literal self-portrait of myself. It reflects growing up as a very skinny, bony child. There was nothing wrong with my body, that’s just how I was built. I never saw it as a problem until middle school, when suddenly everyone felt the need to point out how bony I was. They told me they could see my spine when I hunched over, and my ribs were very prominent. When I was thirteen years old, my friend said “Jesus, Elly, you look anorexic.” I was not anorexic, I had a normal body, but suddenly I found myself forced into insecurities that were not mine to bear.

I am a 19-year-old artist from Vancouver Island currently living in Kelowna and attending UBCO in the Fine Arts program. I work primarily with drawing materials like oil pastels, chalk pastels, and charcoal. I also paint and have recently taken up sculpture. My art style can often be described as cutesy-creepy, colourful, with a dash of humour. I usually lean towards clouds and crows as my subjects.
