Aiden Kirkegaard // They talk about things I don't understand

They talk about things I don't understand, acrylic on canvas, 11”x14”, 2022.

As an artist, I use the practice of painting to explore childhood memories and emotions associated with domestic space. The gestural brushstrokes in my paintings represent memories and movements of family-life, conversations and feelings. The architectural spaces, represented through planes of colour, reference various nooks and corners from my childhood home. “They talk about things I don’t understand” explores memories associated with the nature of becoming and maturing as an adolescent, emphasizing the tension between girlhood and womanhood. I am interested in how our memories accumulate within domestic spaces, building upon one another in the same way that brushstrokes and colour build layers and atmosphere in a painting. Paint has provided me a way to explore how my own manufacturing of girlhood has been both built and broken down by the spaces in which I grew up.
