Mary Jong // Valley Quilt

Valley Quilt, acrylic on canvas, 36” x 36”, 2010/2021,

My belief is that we must use our resources wisely and lessen our global footprint. Managing the Allan Brooks Nature Center has given me insight on how our choices can affect future generations in regards to the earth and its resources. Sustainability is understanding how everything is connected. Our earth resources are not infinite and cannot be sustained for an indefinite period of time. We as individuals must make a choice on how we impact our environment by lessening our global footprint. My painting represents nature and the Okanagan's rich diversity and its resources. Growing up as a market gardener, my family has carried out traditional farming practices by rotating crops as well as keeping the land free of chemicals and pesticides. In working the rich fertile bottomland to grow vegetables, my practice draws upon my inspiration of the earth, sky, water and mystical beauty of the Okanagan Valley.
